Senior Cloud DevOps Engineer 


The successful candidate must be a subject matter expert in extending a firm's on premise compute infrastructure to an external cloud service, instantiating services at the external provider, and incorporating the offering within an existing service catalog. The candidate must have in depth hands-on experience with a wide range of computing platforms, enterprise core services, and Amazon Web Services.  The role will be primarily focused on design, configuration, implementation and support of a an off premise cloud offering.

The ideal candidate would have experience supporting and delivering the infrastructure components of applications with a heavy focus on automation. You would invest your own time in learning new technologies and modern methods of delivering infrastructure and applications. Your background is in development or traditional IT and you have a clear sense for how those two functions are merging together in the industry. On a given day, you may be interfacing with development teams to derive requirements and create design proposals, writing code to drive the Desired State Configuration of the environment, troubleshooting a complex performance problem across multiple platforms, and leading technical sessions to influence the organizations approach to technology. You should be used to working in a demanding environment which requires dealing with ambiguity, a high level of operational discipline, and the ability to influence others towards a vision.

Principal Responsibilities/Qualifications

  • Creation of an overarching strategy for establishing a secure and well-managed enterprise environment in a public cloud provider
  • Drive Identity and Access Management (IAM), configuration management, and monitoring strategy for AWS
  • Merging of our enterprise CentOS and Windows build requirements with Amazon native AMIs and integration with Amazon native tooling
  • Configuration and management of MLP's VPC at AWS, establishment of our core services in the VPC, enabling AWS to serve as a part of MLP's network
  • Development of code to drive the automated deployment of application environments leveraging both off and on premise services
  • Creation and delivery of development focused services both off and on premise that can be consumed via automated methods
  • Establishment of core functions such as patching, lifecycle, capacity and demand management for cloud services
  • Lead design process for network connectivity to AWS including necessary bandwidth and exploration of various interconnection options
  • Extension of our standard systems management processes into the cloud including change, incident, and problem management
  • Establishment and implementation of monitoring and performance management infrastructure for both availability and performance management
  • Establishment of a cost-based chargeback model, including different configurations of hardware, and incorporating application predicted elasticity
  • Establishment of storage use cases and service catalog including usage of ephemeral storage, EBS, S3, and Glacier
  • Integration of AWS management tooling with our system including automation of spin-up and spin-down and billing approvals
  • Design and implementation of data protection options, including HA and BCP protection at AWS

Qualifications/Skills Required

  • 10+ years of experience as a full time IT professional
  • 3+ years of experience designing and supporting AWS environments
  • Candidates must have a minimum of Bachelor's degree (in Computer Science, Math or Engineering)
  • Demonstrable experience deploying enterprise workloads to AWS
  • Optional but highly desired: knowledge of at least one other cloud hosting solution in addition to AWS (e.g. Google, Azure, Helion Cloud, SoftLayer)
  • Hands-on experience with traditional virtualized services and infrastructure (VMWare, Hyper-V) and managing enterprise on-premise compute implementations
  • Hands-on experience with one or more configuration management systems such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet
  • Thorough understanding of test driven development practices, CI/CD, and managing infrastructure as code
  • Hands-on experience utilizing Amazon Web Services API
  • Proficiency with Python, PowerShell, Perl, Unix shell, or other scripting languages
  • Experience designing and supporting enterprise core services as well as cloud deployments of these services
  • Extensive knowledge of Unix operating systems, especially RHEL/CentOS
  • Working and integration with technology, development, and business teams
  • Business Continuity or Disaster Recovery planning experience a plus
  • Quick learner, Detail oriented; Demonstrable thoroughness and strong ownership of work
  • Excellent team player with a strong willingness to participate and help others
  • Able to prioritize in a fast moving, high pressure, constantly changing environment; High sense of urgency
  • Able to synthesize requirements in an ambiguous environment and translate them into a vision
  • Excellent communication skills
