Job Description:

About the Firm:

Our client is a global investment firm with offices in New York, NY, Menlo Park, CA, and Beijing, China. The firm manages $10+ billion in assets on behalf of individuals, nonprofit organizations, and institutional investors by focusing on high growth investments in the technology, media, and telecommunications space in both the public and private markets.  Their investment approach consists of making a small number of investments based on rigorous proprietary research.  They are look to have a multi-year holding period, an approach which has led to uncommon returns for our investors through a broad range of market conditions over the past 15+ years.

Role:

They are in the middle of building a market intelligence platform based on non-traditional data (ie. Nonfinancial data). We look for unique and creative sources of data (everything from e-commerce pricing to satellite data), use it to model key firm and economic metrics, and present it to investment staff.

We're seeking an engineer interested in taking a lead role in building a data pipeline and warehousing backend for datasets ingested from APIs, web scraping, remote databases, and purchased data feeds. You would help build systems for job scheduling, data anomaly/QA detection, process monitoring, and efficient storage/querying. Our current infrastructure uses Scala, Redshift, and Spark but we are always open to well thought out alternatives. The ideal candidate will have experience and opinions on database architecture and best practices when building high throughput data systems. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of the sections of our architecture and offers technical freedom/creativity.

Our market intelligence platform is used daily by analysts to assess and predict firm specific trends (think questions like "Is Uber gaining market share in Boston? Can online players actually challenge traditional grocery stores? What's our best prediction for sales of company X next quarter?").  We want to avoid "data scientists" that aren't either fantastic statisticians or fantastic software engineers.

Skills:

  • Scala, Python, SQL (all flavors), basic dev-ops experience with AWS
  • Bonus R, Spark, Knowledge of NLP *preferred but not required*
  • Undergraduate degree in math, statistics, computer science, engineering or data science from a top undergrad.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting their resume as an MS word document including a cover letter with a summary of relevant qualifications, highlighting clearly any special or relevant experience.

Please Note: All inquiries will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. Your resume will not be submitted to any client company without your prior knowledge and consent.
